Overview

Founded in 1914 as a unique “citizens' university", Goethe University Frankfurt quickly became known for its progressive teaching methods and pioneering faculty structures. Famous Nobel Prize laureates including Paul Ehrlich, Max Born and Otto Stern taught and researched here.

Goethe University Frankfurt (Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main) is a public research university in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Founded in 1914 as a citizens' university, it is one of Germany's largest and most diverse universities, with over 48,000 students. The university is known for its progressive teaching methods, pioneering faculty structures, and internationally renowned institutes. Nobel Prize laureates Paul Ehrlich, Max Born, and Otto Stern have taught and researched at the university, and the "Frankfurt School" co-founded by Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer had a significant influence on German social sciences.

The university offers over 200 degree programs in 16 faculties across three main campuses in Frankfurt am Main. The Westend Campus, which is home to the social sciences, is considered one of Europe's most modern campuses. The university also has a well-equipped network of libraries, including the German National Library.

Goethe University's research focuses on areas such as molecular and translational medicine, structure and dynamics of life, space, time, and matter, sustainability and biodiversity, and orders and transformations. The university also has clusters of excellence and focuses on topics such as extrajudical and judicial conflict resolution, and sustainable architecture for finance in Europe.
