The National Entrance Screening Test (popularly known as NEST) is an annual college entrance examination in India, conducted for admission into the National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar (NISER) and the Center for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), Mumbai. These two institutes use NEST as a sole criterion for admission to their undergraduate programs. Also, the Integrated Science Education & Research Centre (ISERC) of Visva-Bharati University has been using the merit list of NEST for admission into its undergraduate program. NEST was conducted in 91 cities across India in June 2019.
As of 2018, obtaining a seat in NISER has become highly competitive. From a total of roughly 80,000 applicants nationwide, only 0.32% qualify for admission. As of 2018, the total intake of NISER and UM-DAE CBS is 200+2 students and 45+2 students respectively (where two seats in each college are reserved for students belonging to the state of Jammu and Kashmir). NEST is conducted in both English as well as Hindi language.

Age Criteria
Candidates belonging to General and OBC categories should be born on or after August 1, 2000, in order to fulfil the NEST eligibility criteria. Age limit relaxation of five years is given to candidates belonging to SC/ ST /Divyangjan category.
The National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) 2020 exam pattern provides details about the question paper of the upcoming examination. The National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar will conduct NEST 2020 on June 6 jointly with Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS). The entrance exam will be held in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Moreover, there will be two sessions of NEST 2020 on the exam day i.e. morning shift and evening shift. NEST syllabus 2020 has been released. NEST 2020 syllabus if released online on the official website of the science entrance exam. Questions in NEST exam are asked from topics present in the syllabus of Class XI and XII books. Regarding the same, the official website informs that questions in NEST exam are mainly science syllabus of class XI and XII that is present in NCERT/ CBSE books .
NEST exam will contain questions from the General section- Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. It may also be noted that there is no prescribed syllabus for General section of the exam. The official website informs, "This section tests candidate's familiarity with, but not detailed understanding of, major historical milestones in subjects like Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Environmental Science."
